Introducing UNIX and Linux |
Other IssuesOverview |
Document PreparationOne of the interesting points of contention about using UNIX relates to the choice of popular word-processing packages. Some common application software is not available under UNIX, but there are very good alternatives. For example, this book was typeset using the LaTeX text formatting package, which offers one of the most effective ways of writing documents. Unlike word processors, text formatters do not have the best user-interface, but can provide far better layout of mathematical and other sophisticated output. The following table~ lists various different kinds of software available for UNIX and Linux, with their sources. |
